LESSON PURPOSE

Throughout this course, participants have learned how to manage emotions, resolve conflict, interrupt cycles of violence, and lead through service. Now they will discover the larger vision behind Kingian Nonviolence: the Beloved Community.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed the goal of nonviolence was not simply stopping violence—it was creating communities where justice, love, dignity, opportunity, and reconciliation could flourish.

Participants will begin to see themselves not merely as individuals making peaceful choices but as builders of healthier schools, churches, neighborhoods, and cities.

LESSON TEACHING

Beloved Community

The Beloved Community is not a perfect community.

People will still disagree.

Problems will still exist.

The difference is how people respond.

People choose:

Justice over revenge.
Love over hatred.

Cooperation over division.
Service over selfishness.
Hope over despair.

Teaching

The early church modeled community by sharing burdens, serving one another, and encouraging faithfulness.

Unity does not require uniformity.

People can have different backgrounds and opinions while remaining united in love and purpose.

When someone believes they don't matter...

The community becomes incomplete.

Everyone has gifts.

Everyone has purpose.

Everyone belongs.
