LESSON PURPOSE

Many people believe leadership is about popularity, power, or position. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. demonstrated something different. His leadership was rooted in service, humility, courage, and a willingness to sacrifice for the good of others.

This lesson teaches participants that every young person is already a leader because someone is always watching their example. Participants will discover how to develop character-driven leadership that inspires trust, influences others positively, and builds stronger communities.

LESSON TEACHING

Leadership = Influence

Leadership is not about being in charge.

Leadership is about influencing others toward positive change.

Examples:

  • Older sibling
  • Team captain
  • Student
  • Volunteer
  • Friend
  • Church member

Someone is always watching how you live.

The question is not whether you are influencing others.

Your influence can be positive or negative.

PART TWO

Characteristics of Servant Leaders

Humility A servant leader does not have to be the center of attention.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself.

It is thinking of yourself less often.

Integrity Doing the right thing...

Even when nobody is watching.

Courage Standing for what is right...

Even when it is unpopular.

Compassion Seeing people through eyes of understanding instead of judgment.

Responsibility Owning mistakes.

Keeping promises.

Following through.

Respect Treating every person with dignity.

Including people who disagree with us.

Vision Seeing what could be...

Instead of only what is.

PART THREE

Leadership Is Service

Many people confuse serving with weakness.

Dr. King believed serving others is one of the highest expressions of strength.

Examples:

Helping someone without expecting recognition.

Standing beside someone who is being bullied.

Cleaning up after an event.

Mentoring younger students.

Volunteering in the community.

Listening to someone who is hurting.

PART FOUR

PART FIVE

Dr. King's Leadership Example

He listened.

He prepared.

He studied.

He prayed.

He served.

He forgave.

He remained disciplined.

He inspired hope.

"I will do this by..."

LEADERSHIP HABITS

Daily habits strengthen leadership.

PEACEMAKER'S COMMITMENT – LESSON 7

I believe leadership is a privilege, not a position.

I will use my influence to serve others.

I will lead with integrity, humility, courage, and compassion.

I will protect those who are vulnerable.

I will solve problems instead of creating them.

I will encourage instead of discourage.

I will become the kind of leader I wish I had.

I believe true greatness is found in serving others.

Today I choose to lead with love, courage, and hope.
